THINGS TO DO FIRST

  • Make sure that you have at least 60% battery left on your smartphone.
  • a backup of your data and files in case there is sensitive data that you do not want to lose.
  • Access your phone settings> About the phone> Enter Build number seven times, if prompted, enter the PIN or template activate developer options .

Prerequisites

How to root OnePlus 5 / 5T

1. Unlocking the bootloader

  • Hold down the power button and Restart in Bootloader . Your phone will display "Fastboot Mode" indicating that you are entering Fastboot mode.
  • Connect your phone to the PC using USB. On the desktop, hold Shift and right-click anywhere on the blank space and select " Open Command Prompt Window Here " or " Open Window PowerShell here . "
  • Now type [19659012] fastboot devices
  • It will show the list of devices connected to fastboot. If it lists your device, then you are in luck. Otherwise you need to install the right fastboot drivers for your PC
  • Now type
    fastboot oem unlock

  • This command will unlock your bootloader and erase all your data on your smartphone.

  • Now using the volume and Click the down buttons, highlight Yes by pressing the power button
  • Once completed, the phone will restart and display a warning and restart in the recovery of crude.
  • That's all. Your boot loader is now unlocked.

2. TWRP Recovery Installation

  • Wait for your phone to restart after the boot loader unlock process

    Once restarted, enable developer options by typing 7 times on the build number and activate OEM Advanced Reboot and USB Debugging in Developer Options

  • Access your PC and copy downloaded recovery and paste it under C: / Android
  • Place the file Magisk zip in the internal storage of your phone.
  • Now Restart in Bootloader and connect your phone to the PC.
  • Hold down the Shift key and right-click in the platform-tools folder and select " Open the Command Prompt Window Here " or " Open the PowerShell Window Here . "
  • Rename Recovery you downloaded recovery.img from the platform-tools folder itself.

  • In the command prompt / type PowerShell
    fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
  • When finished, type
    fastboot boot recovery.img

  • You will be recovering TWRP now. Swipe right to authorize changes
  • Press Install and select Magisk zip file from your internal storage.
  • [19659017] Swipe right to confirm the flash .
  • Select Reboot System now.
  • Starting your phone will take a while. So do not worry if it takes longer than usual.
  • And here! Once started, you will be rooted, and you will see the Magisk Manager installed on your smartphone.

Congratulations! You unlocked the boot loader, installed a custom recovery, and reached root access successfully.
NOTE: Do not blink or do not install partial OTA update zips. You will need to download the full OTA zip and then the flash. And if you update your phone, you will have to repeat the process of recovery and rooting again.
